Overcrowding Monitor for the American Express Centurion Lounge in Real-Time
on October 19, 2021 by Gary Leff
Even after accounting for the fact that it would be busier than you anticipate, when you construct a beautiful airport lounge, it will be busier than you expect. People arrive early at the airport. They remain for a longer time. They go out of their way to change terminals to go to the lounge. Add in the fact that the food and drink at American Express Centurion clubs is really very excellent, and it’s no wonder they’ve grown so crowded.
For the last five years, American Express has imposed different access restrictions, but it hasn’t addressed the issue.
Platinum cardholders who spend less than $75,000 per year on their card will no longer be eligible for free access to the lounge starting in February 2023. My wife has an authorized user Platinum card on my account, so she may enter the lounge for free, but I won’t be able to obtain one for my kid until she is 13.
At the same time, American Express, which has been pursuing Delta for at least a decade, now enables Delta’s premium credit card holders to access Centurion lounges as well. So it’s not only about avoiding overcrowding.
The current policy is to restrict Platinum and Delta Reserve cardholders’ access to 3 hours before departure (not after a flight without an onward connection). These lounges may still become busy, but I’ve found that the Charlotte lounge is less congested.

When the lounges are filled, American Express will send customers away and place them on a waiting list. They often ‘clear the waitlist’ after boarding their aircraft.
According to Zach Griff, the American Express app now has real-time capacity indications that will tell you whether the lounge is full before you go.
These capacity indications are integrated directly into the Amex mobile app’s membership tab’s “Find an Airport Lounge” section.
When you arrive at the airport, download the app and search for your chosen Centurion Lounge to get a real-time crowding status update, ranging from “not crowded” to “a bit busy” to “extremely busy” to “nearly full.” If you arrive at the lounge reception and see “nearly full,” you’ll most likely be put on a waitlist to return at a later time.

The functionality isn’t currently accessible for Centurion Studio’s Escape lounges, but it’s on the way.
While showing full lounges is preferable than turning people away, it’s still a recipe for member dissatisfaction. That’s why, long ago, I advocated for a limited number of free visits per year rather than putting age limitations and other restrictions on visitors under the age of 13.
