The United States has an extensive domestic system of award space for award redemption—or to put it another way, there is a wide range of award space available for purchase by members of the American Express Membership Rewards program at a fixed rate (or bonus) every year. (That is, American Express Members can earn miles for purchase of reward space, but can also earn miles for use on American Express Membership Rewards-based purchases.)
Awards for transatlantic award space on American airlines are hard to come by, and they come and go quickly. You can buy one on American’s website, but you have to wait until the award is open and there’s a chance you may never get one. To make the process faster, I’ve started using British Airways transfer points, specifically Chicago O’Hare, to take advantage of their transfer scheme, which allows you to book awards with your British Airways miles.
Award space is always an excellent value, but sadly most times you can’t fly that route direct. As with most routes, competition is high, with most availability being in the high-demand business / first class cabin / premium cabin / premium economy cabin / premium economy with free hot meals / free in-flight meals / free in-flight drinks with food / etc. / etc. … So, if you are short of award miles, you might consider using one of these routes, made even better if they are in the premium class. Another Popular American Miles-Based Route For Wide-Open Transatlantic Award Space

Last week, I mentioned that American Airlines had plenty of transatlantic award space in business class for the entire family. That’s a unicorn, to be sure. Finding overwater business class saving awards has been difficult since US Airways management took over the company. They borrowed $10 billion to fund its loyalty program, yet regular fliers are still not treated as paying customers when redeeming points.
Transatlantic awards with American AAdvantage points are particularly difficult to come by since not only are awards uncommon on American’s own flights, but their main partner over the Pond is British Airways, which imposes massive fuel surcharges on such flights. Taxes and fees may total more than $1500 roundtrip. (Hint: if you’re going to book these flights, book one-ways rather than roundtrips from North America since fuel fees will be cheaper.)
Right now, there’s another intriguing chance to travel intercontinental using American Airlines points, and I wanted to call attention to it since it illustrates another concept. During the first four months of 2022, there is plenty of award space in business class for groups of four or more on the Charlotte – Munich route.
These aren’t money-saving prizes. This implies that you may only book these tickets for this many people using American Airlines points. They’d cost 57,500 miles one trip if they were saver rewards. Instead, depending on the date, rewards of 60,000 or 66,000 miles are offered.
Is it really that difficult to make seats accessible and label them as savers when they’re prepared to accept 60,000 miles as an award?
On Boeing 777-200 aircraft, American Airlines offers two distinct business class seats. This is the ‘Concept D’ seat from Zodiac.
Instead, they are ‘web specials,’ which means no modifications are allowed. For basic routes, this isn’t a huge issue since American has removed all reward cancellation and redeposit costs (for all members, this is no longer a benefit restricted to Executive Platinum and Concierge Key members). That means you may cancel the flight, get your points, and book a new flight.
Web savers aren’t as restricted now as they were before the epidemic, when they couldn’t be changed and redeposits were expensive.
