The Holland America Line announced it will cancel the sailing of Nieuw Amsterdam to allow for repairs. The ship was originally due to depart on July 29 but won’t make its way back from a dry dock until September 14th, 2018.
Holland America Line has canceled the sailing of their ship, Nieuw Amsterdam. The company claims that this is due to a “technical issue.”
Guests scheduled to travel aboard Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam on January 29, 2022, got terrible news this week when their cruise was canceled. Gus Antorcha, the president of the Cruise Line, wrote a letter to affected passengers informing them of the cancellation.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the cruise has been canceled.
While numerous cruises have lately been canceled or changed due to Omicron, the January sailing aboard Nieuw Amsterdam seems to have been canceled for other reasons. In a letter to passengers, cruise company president Gus Antorcha explains:
“Due to the operational ramifications of our charter partners moving two back-to-back charter trips to later dates, we have taken the painful choice to cancel your departure.” Please accept our heartfelt condolences. We know you’ve been looking forward to this trip for a long time.”

The cruises that were canceled were scheduled to depart from Fort Lauderdale. Before returning to Fort Lauderdale, the first cruise would have stopped at Bimini, Falmouth, Jamaica, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Half Moon Cay. The second journey, scheduled for February 5, would have stopped at Grand Turk, San Juan, Puerto Rico, St Thomas, and Half Moon Cay. It has also been canceled.
For Affected Guests, HAL Offers Alternatives
The Nieuw Amsterdam will make one journey on January 23 and then return to service for a full charter cruise on February 12. After that, on February 19, the vessel will resume regular trips.
Guests who were scheduled to go on one of the canceled cruises have the option to rebook or get a full refund. “We are giving the option to move to a similar 6- or 7-day Caribbean cruise aboard Nieuw Amsterdam or Rotterdam,” said the company.
Sailings aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam and the company’s newest ship, the Rotterdam, are among the possible alternative cruises. This contains the travel on January 23 as well as a few others.

If customers opt to switch to a similar 6- or 7-day cruise, their reservation will be transferred to the new journey at the current rate and in the same or equal cabin type.
Guests who purchase a 6-day cruise will get a refund for the one day they will not be able to attend. On their replacement journey, each guest will also receive a $100 refundable credit that will be credited to their shipboard account.
Guests who do not choose to switch their trip to a later or earlier date will get a full refund of all fees paid to Holland America, including flights if booked via the cruise company. If the cruise was paid for using a future cruise credit (FCC), the credit will be added to the guest’s account and may be used to book a future trip.
Cruise Lines Are Versatile When It Comes To Bookings
The cancellation of the Nieuw Amsterdam voyage comes at a time when several cruise lines have been forced to postpone or reschedule trips as a result of Omicron’s spread and the resulting operational modifications. Holland America said last week that it will extend its flexible cancellation policy until September 30, 2022.
“When our passengers buy a vacation, we want them to feel secure,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “Since our return, we’ve witnessed a lot of enthusiasm from visitors who have sailed with us. We want everyone looking forward to their next vacation to feel at ease while making preparations, and our ‘Worry-Free Promise’ provides that assurance.”
Holland America Line has revised the final payment deadlines for new reservations, in addition to its flexible cancellation policy. These are now due 60 days ahead to the journey, rather of the usual 75 or even 90 days, providing visitors more time to change their minds about their holiday plans if required.
