Guests aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship are now forced to wear their masks at all times inside the ship. The only exception is when visitors are actively eating or drinking. The cruise company states the following in a message to passengers:
“Given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases throughout the globe, as well as the addition of Omicron variant concerns, we believe it is necessary to temporarily tighten our onboard health regulations to mandate masks inside at all times, unless actively eating or drinking.” This new update also applies to places and venues that have been vaccinated. We apologize for any inconvenience this may create, but please realize that health and safety always come first. Despite the additional requirement, we are certain that you will enjoy your stay aboard.”
Royal Caribbean’s policy change follows on the heels of Norwegian Cruise Line’s announcement of a new mask policy on the same day.
The New Mask Policy at Royal Caribbean
The new mask regulation, which went into effect on December 17, 2021, is identical to restrictions in place earlier this year. This implies that unless the location is congested, masks are not required in all open-air places of the ships.
If visitors are in an environment where the masks may get wet, such as a pool, they are not required. Inside the cabin and at the cruise line’s special destination of Perfect Day at CocoCay, masks are not required. Finally, children under the age of two do not need the use of a mask.

So, where aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise do guests need to wear a mask? Basically, everywhere on board the ship. Unless you’re actually eating or drinking, this includes the casino, stores, bars, and restaurants.
Guests may be compelled to wear a mask when visiting ports of call. However, this is subject to the port’s specific criteria. The only time masks aren’t required is during calls to CocoCay’s Perfect Day service.
Protocols for Masking (Royal Caribbean Website)
The demand for masks comes at one of the busiest times of year for the cruise sector. Most cruise companies have deployed their ships to the Caribbean for the high season, and with thousands of passengers and hundreds of ships floating around, it’s no wonder that the cruise lines have tightened their rules.
Of course, the issue is what the cruise company will do for passengers who have purchased a trip but do not want to wear their masks at all times.
For the time being, it seems that visitors will have to accept the fact that masks are once again a part of the cruise experience. Despite the established measures, an epidemic on board a ship remains a distinct risk.
