Sweden Set To Remove All Entry Restrictions for Non-EU Travelers

After suffering from mass numbers of refugees and migrants, Sweden is looking to be more welcoming in the future. Entry restrictions will no longer apply for those who are not citizens or residents within Europe. This comes after a change in policy by Prime Minister Stefan Löfven that stated “no one should have to go through unnecessary bureaucracy just because they wanted to travel.”

Sweden is set to remove all entry restrictions for non-EU travelers. The country will open up its borders and allow anyone to enter without a visa, which could change the way people travel in Europe. Read more in detail here: sweden travel ban update.

On April 1, Sweden will eliminate its prohibition on non-essential passengers from so-called “third countries,” which refers to those who are not members of the European Union (EU). The Swedish Ministry of Justice announced the ruling this past Friday.

Sweden joined Norway and Denmark in removing COVID-19 restrictions for travelers from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland (which is neither an E.U. nor an EEA member, but is a member of the European Single Market), allowing them to enter regardless of vaccination status.

Reopening from COVID-19

Sweden also abolished practically all of its pandemic-related domestic social restrictions on February 9, including the necessity to show vaccination certificates when visiting indoor public businesses such as pubs and restaurants. Museums, theaters, and amusement parks, among other cultural and recreational venues, were permitted to reopen at full capacity.

In a few days, all travel restrictions and entrance criteria for incoming foreign passengers from everywhere in the globe, regardless of vaccination status, will be lifted. Sweden’s borders will revert to their pre-pandemic state of openness in April.

“Within the European Union, the entrance prohibition has already been abolished. The administration has now decided not to prolong the prohibition on third-country admission. This will make it more easy for everyone who has been unable to visit Sweden owing to the epidemic in previous years “According to Lonely Planet, Sweden’s minister for justice and home affairs, Morgan Johansson, stated.

Americans (and anybody else from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland) will still need to fulfill entrance conditions, including a valid vaccination or recovery certificate, as well as a negative PCR test done within 72 hours of arrival in Sweden, until the ban ends on March 31.

Denmark and Norway, who are neighbors, have similarly abolished all restrictions on passengers from both within and outside the European Union. On February 12, Norway removed all immunization, testing, and registration restrictions, and on March 29, Denmark removed the final remaining entrance criteria.

Meanwhile, Finland has eliminated restrictions inside the E.U. and Schengen region, but non-EU tourists must present confirmation of complete vaccination, or a single vaccine dosage with a recovery certificate, both of which are valid for nine months (270 days) from the date of the previous injection. Proof of a booster injection is necessary if their original immunization is older than nine months.
